Emma Basch, PsyD

My Approach to Therapy

I have training in various psychotherapy models and treatment approaches which allows me to tailor therapy to best meet your goals. My doctoral training emphasized psychodynamic and relational models of therapy, which seek to understand and modify patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors through a deep understanding of one's emotional, familial, and relational history.  I also have advanced training in Mindfulness-Based therapies, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which target unhelpful patterns in thinking through cognitive, behavior, and mindfulness-based interventions. I am also certifed in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, a validated and effective treatment for trauma and PTSD.

Your needs are unique, and I am committed to developing an integrative and personalized treatment that will work best for you. My style is collaborative and engaging, and my deep passion for reproductive and perinatal health permeates all of my work. I believe it is imperative to be attuned to the role of culture, race, ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation in understanding who you are. As such, you will find that my practice is informed by an understanding of intersectionality and that this perspective is integrated into every aspect of our work together.

In addition to clinical work, I am passionate about teaching and training other mental health professionals. I am a clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at GWU and teach, write, and speak widely about perinatal and reproductive mental health. I also serve on the board of the DC Metro Perinatal Mental Health Collaborative Consortium.

Finally, I have extensive postgraduate training in third-party reproduction and provide the consultation, testing, and reports required by fertility clinics.
