My Approach to Therapy

The most  important thing for me as a therapist is to create a space where people feel safe to connect, tell their stories, and make sense of their experiences. I am particularly drawn to helping people navigate challenges around identity development, relationships, and parenting. After becoming a parent myself, I have become interested in supporting people who are struggling with this transition in one way or another, including people experiencing perinatal depression and anxiety, working through the trauma of fertility challenges and pregnancy loss (including termination for medical reasons), and figuring out how my clients want to balance parenting with other parts of their identity. I am passionate about supporting other professional moms in thinking through how they want to hold, adjust, or let go of the expectations that can come with this role. I also have expertise in supporting people with ADHD, eating disorders or disordered eating, and complex trauma.

My therapeutic style has been described as warm, compassionate, and honest. Where appropriate, I incorporate humor into my work, recognizing the seriousness of my client's experiences but not taking myself too seriously. I was trained as a family systems and psychodynamic therapist, with a strong focus on understanding how relationships have contributed and continue to contribute to the ways that we show up in the world. I also use acceptance and commitment therapy, feminist therapy, and self-compassion, among other approaches, to help meet the needs of the individuals that I work with. I recognize the contributions that marginalization and discrimination have on mental health and recognize the role that power and privilege play both inside and outside of the therapy room and I strive to honor the diverse identities of my clients in our work together.

  • I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. I then went on to earn an MEd from George Washington University in Early Childhood Special Education and Human Development. After teaching elementary special education for a couple of years, I returned to school and earned my MA and PhD in Clinical Developmental Psychology from Bryn Mawr College. As a graduate student, I discovered my passion for working with the shifts and challenges that come with navigating the transition to adulthood and trained at the University Counseling Centers at Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton University. I also worked as a staff psychologist at Wake Forest University.

In all of these roles, I had the privilege of working with people across the adult life span navigating all kinds of challenges. I have particular training and experience in working with trauma, family challenges, eating disorders, identity formation, and development (including exploring and understanding LGBTQ+ identities), and anxiety. I also have additional training in perinatal mental health and enjoy supporting clients with perinatal concerns. I also work as an associate project director for a non-profit, where I develop and present trainings, curricula, and resources about suicide prevention, intimate partner violence, and mental health.Item description
